2010 will see the introduction of an ambitious voluntary initiative called the Campaign for the Farmed Environment which Belmont Seed support whole heartedly. The scheme places the responsibility wholly on estate owners, farmers and land managers to deliver specific environmental benefits.

The next two years will be critical; the campaign must be successful and should be seen as a turning point in the ability of UK farmers to deliver environmental benefit. If we fail, the alternative is a regulatory option with associated red tape and cost, and a likely return to the removal of arable land from production.

CFE Key Targets:
  1. 70% of English farmland managed under agri-environment schemes.
  2. Double the area of key in field Entry Level Scheme options (additional 40,000 hectares).
  3. Retention of currently un-cropped land at 179,000 hectares.
  4. 60% of farmers outside current UK agri-environment schemes to undertake voluntary environmental management.
The key target in number two is the increase in areas of habitat which provide Wild Bird Food and Pollen & Nectar sources. The team at Belmont are actively involved with these schemes at a practical level on both our own and client's farms and have many years experience of establishment and management of habitat crops.
